Italian citizenship is the status granted to an individual (referred to as an “Italian citizen”) to whom the Italian legal system grants full civil and political rights.
It can be obtained through:
Two fundamental requirements are necessary for citizenship by descent: descent from an Italian citizen (such as an Italian ancestor who emigrated) and the absence of any interruptions in the transmission of citizenship.
Citizenship by birth is granted if an individual is born in Italy to stateless parents, or if the parents are unknown or unable to pass on their citizenship to the child according to the laws of their country of origin.
A foreign national can apply for Italian citizenship after ten years of legal residence in Italy, reduced to five years for stateless individuals or refugees, and to four years for citizens of European Union countries.
A foreign citizen married to an Italian citizen may apply for citizenship after two years of residence in Italy. Citizenship application documents should be submitted to the Prefect of the applicant’s province of residence.
A foreign national born in Italy who has resided legally and continuously until reaching legal adulthood (age 18) can become a citizen if they declare their intent to acquire Italian citizenship within one year of their 18th birthday.
