Car Insurance in Italy

When registering a car in Italy, you must take out third-party liability insurance, known as “RC Auto.”
This insurance is mandatory and valid in all EU countries. It covers material damages and personal injuries caused to people other than the driver.

  • Coverage limits:
Third-party liability insurance in Italy has a coverage limit (the maximum amount the insurance company will pay in the event of damages caused to third parties).
The basic coverage for a third-party liability insurance policy is €6,450,000.00 for personal injuries and €1,300,000.00 for property damage, which can be extended up to €10,000,000.00.
  • Optional coverage extensions:
Third-party liability insurance can be extended to numerous optional coverages, such as roadside assistance, natural events, driver injury, collision, comprehensive (kasko), glass damage, vandalism, theft, fire, and legal protection.
  • Determining the premium:
The factors that affect the cost of insurance include:

    • The type of vehicle (Registration date), Fuel Type (gas, methane, or diesel), Kilometers driven
    • Driver characteristics (Age, Year of driving license, Place of residence)
    • The Tariff System *

*Car insurance in Italy follows the Bonus-Malus tariff system, which starts with an entry class (14). At each annual renewal, the premium may either decrease (bonus) or increase (malus) depending on whether any claims occurred during the observation period. (Rules regarding the proper assignment of the bonus class are outlined in IVASS Provision no. 72/2018). If you have a vehicle already insured abroad, you can provide the Italian insurance company with a statement from the foreign insurer that allows for the identification of the Universal Conversion Class (CU) to be applied to the contract. This statement will be considered a fully valid claim history. If the statement is not provided, the contract is assigned to class 14.

  • Other variables:
In addition to what has been discussed so far, other variables should be considered:

    • Driving plans. Experienced drivers (limited to drivers over 26 years old) or any drivers (open to all drivers).
    • Clauses. The inclusion of deductibles and excesses.
    • Black Box*.

*The black box is a safety device that allows monitoring and recording of technical parameters of the vehicle and driver behavior. It is installed for safety reasons and to prevent fraud in exchange for a discount on the RC Auto premium. The amount of this discount is at the discretion of each insurance company.

  • Before purchasing:
Before purchasing the policy for your vehicle, carefully read the proposed quote, the information notice, and the contract terms.
