Elective residence in Italy

The “Elective Residence” permit in Italy is issued to foreign citizens who intend to settle in the country without engaging in employment.

Who can apply:

  1. Non-EU citizens with an entry visa
  2. Non-EU citizens with a residence permit for work and/or family reunification who wish to convert their previous permits to elective residence
  3. Non-EU citizens belonging to the family unit of EU citizens (partners, de facto cohabitants, dependents living with an EU citizen)
  4. Non-EU citizens working at entities and institutions of the Vatican City

Documentation required:

  • A valid identity document;
  • Application for a residence permit;
  • Birth certificate;
  • Criminal record certificate issued by the country of origin;
  • Declaration of accommodation;
  • Declaration of sufficient means for personal support;
  • Insurance policy against the risk of accidents and illness.


After submitting the necessary documentation, the police headquarters will decide whether to issue or refuse the “Elective Residence” permit. The “Elective Residence” permit will have a maximum duration of 2 years. The applicant who is granted the “Elective Residence” permit will not be allowed to engage in employment activities.
